Timbuk2 367-4-2000 Review by Krystal R. Young (Pacific Northwest)

Overall this bag is the most bang for you're buck. I purchased the medium sized blue backpack. It is very good looking and lightweight. As soon as it arrived I biked 4 miles to the grocery store in the rain with it. In the bag I managed to fit: 1 gallon of milk, 1 sac of potatoes, 1 6-pack of beer, 4 canned goods, 1 bag of coffee, 24 eggs, lots of fruits and vegetables, some bread, 1 frozen pizza, 1 liter of soda, 1 jug of olive oil, 3 big bottles of soap, shampoo, and conditioner AND there was still room to spare. I was afraid it would be too heavy to bike home with but once I put it on my back it didn't feel remotely heavy at all. Also, my groceries were still cool and dry when I got home.
In addition, I took it out camping in the desert for the weekend and was amazed at how well it held up. This bag easily fits 1 2-person tent, 2 sleeping bags, a sleeping pad, 2 gallons of water, plenty of food and cooking supplies, flashlights, first aid kit, change of clothes, toilet paper, etc. This may sound weird but this bag appears to be dirt repellent too! This bag was thrown around in the dirt and mud for 3 days, and when I got home I wiped it off with my hands and it looked practically brand new again! So there you have it, $80 gets you a pretty darn good bag that can certainly get the job done. Oh and I love the bottle opener on the strap too, since I can't use a lighter as a bottle opener, this makes for a quick and easy way to open a beer!

I can't say enough about this bag. I take it almost everywhere I go, on my bike, to the coffee shop, when I am staying the night somewhere, or travelling over seas(carry-on a TON of stuff). I would never want to go back to a traditional backpack or messenger bag after using this one. Easily fit 5+ bags of groceries, 5 day trip luggage, or just your laptop and a couple pens.

The bag packs down tiny when not filled and can carry a massive amount of stuff when you need it to. I like the simple design of two pockets, I never lose or forget about stuff I put in all the dozens of pockets my old backpack had. Everything can be seen in the two main pockets. The laptop compartment is very nicely done, the bottom of it suspended from the ground so when you set your pack down there so no direct contact with the ground. There are accessory tethers on the straps which I intend on making use of soon.

Unique ways I use this bag/PROS:
- I roll the top opening down keeping it open. The long velcro strips make it every fast and easy to flip the edges down. This leaves the top of my pack exposed and open so I can easily get in and out without opening anything ( also looks pretty cool). The strap across the top holds the pack shut. I use this for carrying camera tripods which stick out several feet from the top of the bag or if I just want fast access to anything during the day. 95% of the time I use it as intended and find the trade off of a couple extra seconds to open a bag for the huge amount of space fine. Hasn't bothered me yet.
- The cinch staps on the sides of the bag can be used to loop through anything extra you want to carry.
- I find myself constantly storing loose papers, notebooks, ect. in the laptop pocket. It gives me fast access, keeps my organized, and with my laptop in or not they stay flat.
- I actually ( contrary to other reviews) like the velcro on the front pocket instead of a zipper, I use it more because it is faster to access. There are problems with this I will note below. The pocket is a real pocket and has space to put my dslr camera with a large lens.

CONS:
- I have read others have not had this problem but I do need a sternum strap for this bag, it slips to the sides on me (215lb, broad chest). I am going to attach a home-made one and problem solved.
- The U-lock side pocket is practically useless for anything but a U-lock. With the bag full at the bottom the pocket has no storage space, it is not designed to hold a water bottle.
- The material is sturdy but not waterproof at all. The front pocket has a waterproof top but I would never trust this pack with my camera or laptop in it in the rain. It would be nice if they offered a dry version. To get around this I carry a rain cover for the bag, I also have a dry bag I can easily fit in the pack, as well as carrying some ziplock bags in the pockets ( for a cellphone or ipod to make extra sure its safe). I think a laptop is safer in this pack due to its location and all the padding then in a standard laptop bag for a short amount of time.
- If you are a pet owner and get the black bag, you will be cleaning it daily. Hair sticks to the fabric.
- When full ( like when my DSLR is in it) the top of the front pocket is not long enough to secure to the extended pouch. This is annoying but the pouch is still secure.

In summary: This bag is dead simple, very strong, very versatile, useful for almost all occasions. I've never come across anything (even Chrome) that compares to it's features and looks. If they come up with a dry version I will upgrade, if not I will be using this one for a long long time.

Timbuk2 367-4-2000 Review by Zulqa

After debating whether or not to spend the money to get this backpack, I finally decided to give it a shot. I purchased the dark brown with the orange colored front flap, which is not listed as one of the colors here on amazon.

Pros:

Visually the backpack looks amazing. I currently own a black North Face Recon and the Timbuk2 just simply looks way better. I got the medium size and it is not crazy huge as I was afraid it might be. It's just the right size. I'm about 5'8" and the bag doesn't look awkward or anything like that.

The material is really nice and light and the straps are very comfortable. Even though there is no crazy padding on the straps, I find it much more comfortable than my recon backpack that has quite a bit of padding.

To test how comfortable it is with weight in the backpack I put in 5 medical books out of which 2 are hardcovers and the number of pages range from 200-400. Along with that I threw in a hoodie, jeans and my 13 inch laptop in the laptop compartment. The pack was rolled back down pretty much to the same size and did not have to be extended. I put on the bag and i could hardly feel the weight. I was amazed as to how comfortable it was. The same weight in the Recon backpack was very noticeable and no where near as comfortable. Even with all the stuff in it the hemlock backpack didn't look bizarre/ awkward or gigantic.

Also you wont feel the books or laptop grinding into your back or anything like that. It has a very comfortable feel.

It's very easy to open and close the main compartment and it is not a hassle like some people describe it to be, or at least I did not think it was very cumbersome at all. Even completely unfolded its not like you have to jump inside the pack to find your stuff. Everything is easily accessible.

The bottle opener is also a very nice touch and the side laptop compartment truly makes it easy to quickly take out your laptop without having to remove the backpack from your back. I used to think that it was kind of funny how this feature is mentioned in the video on the timbuk2 website but now that I use it on a daily basis for school I truly think its a great feature to have. It is also great for quickly taking out your laptop when going through security at the airport.

Using it while biking was also very enjoyable. The bag stayed in place on my shoulders and was very comfortable. There is also a loop at the front bottom of the backpack for a LED light attachment for those of you riding at night, something which I found very useful.

Cons:

The only complaint I have is that I wish there were 1 or 2 additional small zip compartments and an additional side pocket for a small umbrella or another water bottle.

The front compartment flap has a nice organizer which is definitely useful, but it would just be nice to perhaps have a couple more small storage spaces on the front or the side.

To give you an idea, the front flap organizer has 3 pouches which are open on top (the opening for each is slightly bigger than the length of a credit card and also slightly deeper than the length of a credit card) (by length of the credit card I mean the longer part of the credit card). Next to this is a single pouch which is twice as wide and same depth. and there are also 3 pen holder pockets. On top of these compartments there is a zipped up compartment which spans the length and depth just short of the entire front flap compartment.

The flap is held closed by velcro, and there is a good amount of it to keep it closed. It feels secure to me and I have yet to find it open up or have things fall out of it. Hopefully the velcro doesnt become crazy lose over a period of time because then it could be a problem. However as of now it is secure and I don't feel worried that stuff will fall out.

So really there is a pretty good amount of storage and the added zip compartment inside the flap is a nice addition.

Having said all that, I would definitely recommend getting this backpack. It looks great, feels great, can store a lot of stuff, is comfortable, and feels very durable. The lack of additional pockets should not be a deal breaker in my opinion. I greatly look forward to taking this with me back home on my next plane journey during thanksgiving break!
